Dabell, Matt

Before coming to Warwick in 2011 I'd dabbled in a few sports, but never excelled particularly in any of them. Rowing proved a natural fit and something new and exciting to engage in during my studies. I met plenty of great people, building strong friendships through the hours we put in together in training. For the first time in my life I feel proud of the level of fitness and strength that I've achieved.

Last year I started as Novice, having not rowed previously. The year proved successful, coming 5th in BUCS regatta, beating the likes of Newcastle and Nottingham, coming only seconds behind Durham and Queens. This was a huge achievement considering the relative levels of funding those universities receive.

There is literally no better feeling than exceeding all expectations on the water and seeing all the hard work we put in through training come to fruition.

After BUCS, I was selected to be part of the Henley 1st VIII which was a huge achievement as a Novice.

I'm really looking forward to meeting all the Novices this year, and am determined to work my hardest to make sure they do one better than us and get a medal this year.
